The Weekly Inventions of
Dr Splatterjacket

A notebook is lying on the table. There is a stave of music near the top of a page, with another stave being written by a pen, held in a hand. At the top of the pen there is a hole like that in a flute and musical notes are coming out of it.

FluTonePen

2nd May 2026

Now that I had everything I needed to get on with mining… and that I knew Zargoid 5 was on holiday and not proceeding with his mine… I realised I could relax slightly and properly begin the next stage of drilling to the centre of the Earth.

But starting a new stage like this requires pomp.

It requires ceremony.

It requires… a song.

Now, I could have used my HeatHorn… but I didn’t need to cook.

I could have used my MelodicTissues… but I didn’t have a cold.

I briefly considered my HarmoComb… but frankly, I didn’t want to listen to the harmonica.

And while all of those inventions are perfect for playing a tune (while doing something else), what I needed here was something very different.

I needed to compose a tune.

And write it down.

At the same time.

Luckily, I had exactly the right invention… The FluTonePen.

What is a FluTonePen? It is a combination flute and pen. I originally invented something called the FlutePen, but the sound was disappointingly tinny. So, I refined the design into the FluTonePen, which produces a much more rich, sonorous tone… remarkable for such a small device… especially one that also contains an ink cartridge.

With the FluTonePen, you can play a melody on the flute, and then immediately write it down before you forget it. Please note: the ability to read or write music is not included.

Now, I will admit there is one small drawback, you do have to come up with your own tunes. Very few compositions exist specifically for the FluTonePen, and you certainly wouldn’t lower yourself by playing something written for a piano or banjo.

No.

Of course you wouldn’t.

So, get your FluTonePen today.

I just used mine to compose, and then perform, a magnificent piece for my German miners to mark the beginning of the next stage of drilling.

We are almost ready to begin.

Note to self: Maybe if this was an instrument where you could also write things down it would have been better to cross the pen with a recorder?
